  • Study reveals hip and knee replacement performance in England and Wales 30 April 2019 The performance of different prosthetic implant combinations used in patients undergoing hip and knee replacements in England and Wales over the last 14 years have, for the first time, been directly compared in two new studies. The University of Bristol findings, published in the BMJ Open today [Tuesday 30 April], reveal substantial variability in the performance of different joint replacements, and the number of patients requiring a second surgery.

  • Leaving school earlier could increase the risk of heart disease 22 May 2019 Although it has been known for a long time, that education, and socioeconomic position affect health, particularly in later life, there was limited knowledge as to why. New research has found that increased levels of BMI, blood pressure and smoking partly explain why people who left school at an earlier age could be at an increased risk of heart disease.

  • Scientists discover the source of new CFC emissions 22 May 2019 Since 2013, annual emissions of a banned chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) have increased by around 7,000 tonnes from eastern China, according to new research published in Nature today [Wednesday 22 May] by an international team of scientists from the UK, South Korea, Japan, USA, Australia and Switzerland.
  • Chronic diseases monitored in primary care could lead to unnecessary testing 13 June 2019 Guidelines used by GPs to monitor chronic diseases are based on expert opinion rather than evidence, according to a review of the guidelines by National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) researchers at the University of Bristol. The review, published today [Thursday 13 June] in the British Medical Journal, looked at guidelines for chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, which are monitored through a range of tests in GP surgeries.
  • African rondavel unveiled to celebrate the Botanic Garden's South Africa collection 22 May 2019 An African rondavel will be unveiled at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden tomorrow [Thursday 23 May] to celebrate the Garden's African heritage and its South Africa display in the Mediterranean climatic region. The thatched African-style hut will be officially opened by Beryl Ferguson, Board Chairperson of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
  • Artificial red blood cells enable research into malaria invasion 29 August 2019 Researchers at the University of Bristol and Imperial College London have established a new model system that uses red blood cells grown in the laboratory to study how malaria parasites invade red blood cells.
  • Global study finds high success rate for hip and knee replacements 14 February 2019 After reviewing thousands of case studies going back 25 years across six countries, generalisable survival data is now available for the first time to estimate how long hip and knee replacements are likely to last.
