  • Non-invasive breathing support for COVID-19 patients isn’t linked to heightened infection risk 4 November 2021 The use of non-invasive breathing support, commonly known as CPAP or HFNO, to treat moderate to severe COVID-19 infection, isn’t linked to a heightened infection risk, as currently thought, suggest two new studies which included work led by University of Bristol researchers. The findings and a linked editorial are published today [4 November] in Thorax .
  • Bristol technology at heart of shortlisted bid for £30 million CVD research prize 24 January 2020 A truly ground-breaking approach to cardiovascular health involving wearable technology and sensors in the home, expanding on pioneering University of Bristol research, has been shortlisted for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Big Beat Challenge £30 million award.
  • Highly hazardous pesticides: policies should focus on bans, rather than secure storage, studies suggest 11 August 2017 Global policies on access to highly hazardous pesticides – commonly ingested in acts of self-poisoning and suicide in rural Asia – should focus on national bans, rather than safe storage, according to two studies involving University of Bristol academics in The Lancet and The Lancet Global Health journals.
  • Lung capacity tests found to be accurate precursor of co-morbidities 2 November 2021 One of the largest studies to investigate whether Preserved Ratio Impaired Spirometry (PRISm), an understudied low lung function state, is an early predictor of co-morbidities has found it is strongly associated with an increased risk of death. The analysis, led by University of Bristol researchers and published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, evaluated results of lung spirometry tests in over 350,000 UK adults and followed them up over 12 years.
  • Launch of Bristol: Take Drugs Seriously 22 January 2020 A series of ground-breaking events that aim to change the way we talk about drug use, policy and harm reduction launches in Bristol tomorrow [Thursday 23 January].
  • Helpful customization or furtive manipulation? How Germans see personalisation of online services 25 February 2020 Whether we are looking for a restaurant tip, researching health information, or scrolling through social media posts, algorithms use the personal data they gather on us to determine what we are shown online. But how aware are people of the impact algorithms have on their digital environments? A team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the University of Bristol has conducted a survey of 1,065 people in Germany to address these questions.
  • Slow progress on stillbirth prevention leaves parents of 2.6 million babies suffering in silence each year 27 January 2016 More than 2.6 million stillbirths continue to occur globally every year with very slow progress made to tackle this ‘silent problem’, according to new research published in The Lancet.
  • How Bristol drones could help save our most endangered species 21 January 2020 The University of Bristol and the Bristol Zoological Society (BZS) are pioneering a new approach to wildlife conservation, involving machine-learning and drone technology, which could impact wildlife conservation projects worldwide.
  • New research could reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death 20 January 2020 New research has shown that by changing the time course of voltage change early when the heart cell contracts it is possible to both withhold a potentially lethal electrical disturbance and improve the strength of cardiac contraction in heart failure at the same time.
  • The Robot A-Team vital to the future of offshore wind and Net Zero 15 July 2021 One of the UK’s most ambitious robotics projects has proven the concept for robotic teams repairing offshore wind farms. The project paves the way for human-robot teams at wind farms within 10 years and wind farms designed for robotic maintenance by 2050 – a scenario that will be vital to the UK achieving its Net Zero targets.
